How does sucralose impact your body weight? Does sucralose make you gain or lose weight? Products containing zero-calorie sweeteners are often marketed as being a good choice for weight loss, but what does the research show?   What Does the Research Show About Sucralose and Body Weight? Sucralose is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. The most common sucralose-based product is Splenda. The total carbs and calories Splenda contribute to your diet are negligible since you only consume tiny amounts at a time. Sucralose is actually around 400-700 times sweeter than sugar, and it doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste associated with many other popular sweeteners [1,2]. Despite the marketing and hype behind it all, sucralose and artificial sweeteners don’t seem to have a major effect on body weight. A review of randomized controlled trials, which are considered the gold standard in scientific research, shows that artificial sweeteners only reduce body weight by around 1.7 pounds on average [3].
