Mainstream guidelines recommend that patients with type 2 diabetes consume 200-225 grams of carbohydrates per day. [1] This is especially concerning since carbohydrates cause the greatest spike in blood sugar, and insulin release.Why is this being recommended?Simply because the American Diabetes Association states there is inconclusive evidence to suggest a specific carbohydrate limit, however, those same guidelines state that carbohydrate intake is the largest single factor in blood sugar levels, resulting in the need for medication.The vicious cycle continues because if one is taking medication for diabetes, carbohydrates are needed as the medication can cause blood sugar to go too low.Dr. Hallberg gives five simple rules to live by to reverse type 2 diabetes and get off insulin:1.    If it says “light”, “low-fat”, or “fat-free”, it stays at the grocery store.
