Autophagy refers to the natural process when your body cleans out damaged cells to regenerate healthier, newer cells. Auto means self and phagy means eat. The literal meaning of autophagy is ‘self-eating’ or self-devouring, but contrary to what you might think, autophagy is actually beneficial for your health. Autophagy is an evolutionary self-preservation mechanism where your body removes dysfunctional cells and recycles parts of them toward cellular cleaning and repair. Autophagy removes debris, so your cells can function optimally. Autophagy promotes adaptation and survival as a response to toxins accumulated in the cells.
