Why did you start keto?
In college, I was captivated by optimal nutrition and peak performance concepts. I desperately wanted to know how to fuel my body to its maximum state of effectiveness.
Naturally, I began studying nutrition. Surprisingly, as I put mainstream nutritional advice into practice, my energy, concentration, and overall performance began to decline.
It wasn’t until I discovered keto that I truly understood what optimal nutrition
looked and felt like. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not claiming my diet is some perfect piece. I still participate in my fair share of Ben and Jerry’s benders. I’m just saying keto has given me the framework to fuel my body in a way that makes me feel stronger and sexier than ever.
This framework has helped with hormone restoration after the birth of my son; it also helped with the postpartum weight. Additionally, the ketogenic diet helped my body combat cancer into complete remission.
What was the hardest part of keto and how did you overcome it?
Tracking macros has been the most challenging aspect of keto for me. It’s not that tracking is difficult; it’s just such an arduous process. The good thing about tracking macros is that it was only necessary at the beginning of my journey. Over time I began to understand which foods were optimal choices and which were not.
Biggest changes in your day to day life?
Confidence for the keto win! Not only was I able to say sayonara to my muffin top, but I also gained confidence in my career within the coaching arena. Learning how the mechanisms of ketosis and apoptosis function to heal the body has impacted my practice dramatically. Such knowledge has shifted clients’ focus from simply losing weight to promoting cellular health and well-being.
Best tip for newbies?
People will tell you that keto has no room for mistakes—that the diet won’t work if you cheat. I’m here to tell you that you’re going to break down and cheat at some point—we all do.
And you know what else? Regardless of the cheating, you WILL have massive success with the ketogenic diet! So don’t worry if you slip up for a day (or a month)—just don’t make a habit of it. Instead, recommit to keto the following day and keep at it!
If there is one thing that you could tell yourself when first getting started, what would it be and why?
Stop food-shaming yourself! The sooner you heal your relationship with food, the quicker the results will come.
