Who doesn’t love a giant burrito from Chipotle? It’s hard to resist the delicious combinations, but it’s good to remember that a 5-pound burrito often comes with a hefty carbohydrate price tag. It seems like almost every menu item has rice, a tortilla, or chips, so is it even possible to be keto at Chipotle?
Before you even assemble your burrito, the flour tortilla shell will cost you about 320 calories and a whopping 50 grams of carbs. That’s more than double your daily allotment if you’re trying to stick to 20 grams per day. If you add the cilantro-lime white rice, you tack on an extra 210 calories, bringing the total carb count up to 90 grams – and that’s just for rice and the tortilla. If you add barbacoa, grilled fajita veggies, cheese, sour cream, guac, queso, sour cream, corn salsa, and romaine, then you’re looking at a burrito with 1395 calories and a terrifying 132 grams of carbs. Yikes!
Not only does this sabotage anyone who’s counting calories, but it will also knock you out of ketosis faster than you can say guacamole.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to say goodbye to Chipotle. With a few modifications, you can have your burrito and ketosis.
If you are trying to be keto at chipotle, first, stick with the burrito bowl and eliminate the tortilla. Choose barbacoa, guac, Monterey jack cheese, romaine, sour cream, and fresh tomato salsa. Your new calorie total is 510 with only 11 grams of crabs. While their queso may seem tempting, opt for shredded cheese instead; 4oz of their queso contains 8g of carbs.
Tip: Skip the chips! The large side of tortilla chips adds 810 calories and 110 grams of carbs and that’s without any cheese or dips. Being keto at chipotle can be simple if you avoid the obvious carbohydrates (like rice and chips) and skip the hidden carbs (like what’s in their queso).
