But, you might find yourself wondering what condiments you can enjoy on that burger. Most kinds of ketchup should be avoided but is mustard keto?

In order to understand whether or not mustard is keto, let’s go over what exactly mustard is made of.

What is Mustard Made Of?

Mustard is made by mixing ground mustard seeds with white vinegar, water, turmeric (where the yellow color comes from), and seasonings. These seasonings vary from brand to brand but most add garlic, paprika, and salt. White wine may also be added in place of or in addition to the vinegar.

Most classic yellow mustard brands on the market stick to these ingredients, but some do add honey or sugar.

What is Dijon Mustard Made Of?

Dijon mustard is made from ground brown mustard seeds, with the addition of vinegar, salt, and water. Some dijon mustards may also add brown sugar, table sugar, or honey to add sweetness.

In general, mustard has 0 calories, 0g of carbohydrates, 0g of fat, and 0g of protein. Since it is just water, vinegar, and a small quantity of ground mustard seeds and spices, the macronutrients in one serving are negligible. [1]

Is Mustard Keto?

Yes, mustard can be consumed on a keto diet. Mustard has 0 grams of net carbs and will not kick you out of ketosis. That being said, while most mustards are sugar-free, not all are. Honey mustard, for example, has added honey which is too high in carbs to be considered keto-friendly.

Always read the nutrition facts panel and ingredient label before consuming condiments on keto. In general, most mustards are keto-friendly, but look out for added sugar!
